  • Helps drown out unwanted noise

Disadvantages:

  • Some designs are dangerous for children
  • Can get expensive depending on the design
  • Adds an extra pool cleaning step
  • May be at risk of weather damage
  • Some materials can erode over time

Now that you know the pros and cons, let’s “dive” into our top pool waterfall ideas!

#1: Hot Tub Spillway Waterfall

One of the most common ways to incorporate a waterfall in your backyard is to create a spillway from your hot tub into your pool. You will, of course, need to make sure that your tub is located directly up against your pool for this suggestion to work.

Once you’ve got that set up, you’ll need to create a cut-out on the side of your hot tub enclosure where you want the water to spill over. Once you’re done, your tub, waterfall, and pool will flow effortlessly together. Lots of hotels and spas have waterfalls like these — it’s so chic.

#2: Grotto Waterfall

Another way to get a hotel or resort feeling in your pool area is to install a grotto. Not only is it attractive to the eye, but if you have kids, they’ll love swimming in and out of it! Once you’ve got your grotto, it’s really easy to make it into a waterfall. The water will flow from the top to create a secret cave. It’s perfect for games like Marco Polo!

If you do have young children, you just want to make sure that you set up certain safety measures. You should never allow beginner swimmers to enter it without an adult.

#3: Nature-Inspired Waterfall

A nature-inspired waterfall takes a nod from creeks, rivers, and the like. Similar to a grotto, this type of waterfall is made with stones and rocks. They also typically feature several different layers — just like you would see out in the great outdoors.

Nature-inspired waterfalls are just begging to be surrounded by lots of plants and greenery. You may also consider installing one in a saltwater pool. You’ll really get the feeling that you’re out in the jungle taking a dip!

#4: Contemporary Waterfall

While grottos and nature-inspired waterfalls are a great choice, you may be in the market for something a bit sleeker. That’s where a contemporary waterfall comes in. There are several different directions to take this style.

You could build a wall, cover it in tiles, and install one or more jets that cascade down from the top. Another idea would be to opt for a waterfall jet made of chrome or another type of metal. It’s stylish, elegant, and sophisticated.

#5: Multiple Pool Waterfalls

More is always better, right? Maybe not always, but when it comes to a pool with waterfalls, multiple can give your pool a real luxury feel. Consider adding two or more. Many design experts believe that odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye. Keep this in mind — a set of three waterfalls may be your best bet.

You could also install other visual elements that surround them, like large potted plants, sculptures, or even an eye-catching rock formation. Get creative!
