How to Heat a Pool

When the cold weather hits but you still want to take advantage of your swimming pool, learning how to heat a pool is essential! Find our preferred methods below.

A heated pool allows you to use your swimming pool all year long. If you’re wondering how to heat a pool, there are a few different methods, ranging from gas to heat pumps.

While some folks choose to winterize their pools once the temperatures start to drop, you may be interested in learning how to heat a pool instead. Having a heated pool means that you can use it no matter how chilly it is outdoors. It will help you get the most use out of your backyard oasis — and going swimming in a nice and warm pool while it’s cold out can be a really memorable experience.

There are a few different ways to heat your pool, and we’ve outlined the best below. Once you invest in the right equipment, it’s as easy as pressing a button.

Option #1: Gas Heat

These types of pool heaters use natural gas or propane. They work using a pump system: water gets pumped from the pool, through a filter, and then into the heater. The gas burns via the heater’s combustion chamber to heat the water before it gets pumped back into the pool.

If you want your pool to heat up in a matter of minutes, consider a gas-powered heater. This heating method is your best bet if you don’t use your pool every day. Simply turn on your heater when you want to go swimming, and turn it off when your pool isn’t in use. They are cost-effective, especially when compared to heat pumps. Plus, you can use them in any type of climate, no matter how cold it may get in the winter.

Our Universal H-Series line of gas pool heaters features plenty of options to choose from. You’ll have to determine the size you’ll need, which is directly correlated to your pool’s size. The time it takes to heat your pool depends on its size and the model you choose. You can also use these types of heaters to heat your hot tub if you have one.

Option #2: Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are the best choice if you plan on consistently using your swimming pool throughout the winter months. Pool heat pumps work by drawing heat from the outside air and then compressing it. The compressed hot air is then passed to the water to heat it. Unline gas heaters, this type of heating system doesn’t generate heat. It’s a more environmentally-friendly way to heat your pool for sure, as you don’t need to worry about using any gas at all. That said, heat pumps take more time to heat your pool, which is something to consider. That’s why they’re the best for people who want to make use of their pool multiple times a week. They’ll need to be on for much longer before the water temperature noticeably increases.

Heat pumps tend to last longer than gas heaters and are easier to maintain, but you won’t be able to use them in all climates. Because this type of heating system draws on heat from the air, if the outside air temperature drops below a certain temperature, it won’t work.

Our line of Hayward heat pumps is high-performance and energy efficient. They can help you save up to 70% in operating costs! We have a variety of sizes available that will work with a range of different types of pools. We even offer a heat pump that can also cool the water — perfect if you live in a very hot climate!

Option #3: Combine Gas Heat and Heat Pumps

You could also combine the power of gas heat and a heat pump! This is a great option if you want to save on energy consumption as well as cost. You can use the heat pump for daily use, then switch to a gas pool heater once the temps really start to drop.

It’s the most energy-efficient way to heat your pool (and hot tub!) in any type of climate. You’ll be able to maintain your ideal pool temperature and just use the gas heater to increase the heat when needed. It’s a great way to get the best of both worlds: choose between the heat pump or gas heat on cooler days, no matter where you live.

Choose the heating system that will work the best for your specific needs and you’ll be able to enjoy a heated pool any time of the year!
