Top 7 Hacks To Save Money For Pool Owners

Owning a pool can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! There are lots of hacks to save money that you can take advantage of — and most of them are easy and straightforward.

You can start using our hacks to save money when owning a pool right away! Taking care of your equipment and making sure to winterize your pool are just a few.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about the cost of owning, running, and maintaining a swimming pool. While they do require a bit of an investment, there are also many hacks to save money out there! Don’t underestimate the power of being intentional and taking good care of your backyard oasis. A little bit of forethought can help you save a lot.

Enjoying your swimming pool doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. Below you’ll find our top 7 hacks to save money for pool owners.

#1: Take Care Of Your Equipment

When you take better care of your pool equipment, it will last longer — it’s as simple as that! Accessories like vacuums, heaters, lights, pumps, and filters do much to keep your swimming pool running smoothly. Make sure to read the owner’s manual carefully when you purchase them. These manuals typically include care instructions. When you treat your equipment right, you can double its life cycles.

#2: Keep The Heat In

Much of the cost of running a pool (especially in the winter) is directly correlated to how you heat it. If you can retain it better, you won’t have to worry about turning on the heater — which can get expensive! If you live in a warm climate, you can likely take advantage of the hot sun. Invest in a solar blanket to not only retain the heat but also attract it.

#3: Make Sure To Winterize Your Pool

If you live in a very cold climate and need to winterize your pool before the cold weather sets it, your best bet is to do it yourself. The process isn’t complicated, but pool winterizing services can cost a pretty penny. We have an entire blog article dedicated to showing you how. It only takes 7 steps, and it’s one of our favorite hacks to save money for pool owners.

#4: Keep An Eye On Your Pool Cover

An important part of winterizing your pool is what type of pool cover you choose. In fact, your pool cover is ever-important, even in the warmer months. If you know bad weather is approaching or that you won’t use your pool for a few weeks, it’s important to cover it. And, the way you care for the cover itself could help you save.

Don’t allow excess water from rain or snow storms to build up on the cover. It could seep down into your pool. Then, you’ll have to spend money to shock it! Plus, taking care to clean off your pool cover will make it last a lot longer as we mention in Hack #1!

#5: Run Your Pump At Night

Pool pumps help to keep your pool clean and are also used in heating. This piece of equipment uses quite a bit of electricity. And, did you know that most electricity companies have peak hours during which they charge more? These hours are typically between 7am-7pm. Run your pool pump in the evenings when you’re asleep. It will help save on costs — and you also won’t have to listen to it work as you enjoy a mid-afternoon swim.

#6: Invest In A Robotic Cleaner

Most pool owners use a pump and filters to keep their water clean and, well, filtered. As mentioned, the cost of running both pieces of equipment can get a little pricey. If you want to save, consider investing in a robotic pool cleaner to help. It will clean your pool for you and remove much of the debris before it even has the chance to go through your filter. This means that you can run your pump less and your existing filters will last a lot longer!

#7: Watch Out For Leaks & Evaporation

A big part of maintaining your pool involves making sure that there are no leaks due to damage in the structure of the pool itself. Pools can lose tens of thousands of gallons of water per year due to things like leaks, evaporation, splash out (after an epic cannonball!), and other things. Catch a leak early on in order to prevent a very expensive repair job. You can also diminish evaporation by using a trust pool cover as mentioned in Hack #4.

Try any of the hacks above and you’ll be able to save money like a pro!
