Proper Pool Chemical Storage

Wondering about the best way to store your pool chemicals? We’re sharing our top pool chemical storage ideas to keep you (and your pool) safe and in tip-top condition.

Proper pool chemical storage includes keeping them out of direct sunlight, away from anything flammable, and out of reach of children.

Your pool wouldn’t work correctly without the right pool chemicals! Not only do they keep your water clean and clear, but they also help prevent algae from building up. It’s important not to let your pool's chemical storage fall to the wayside.

There are several things to keep in mind when deciding where to store these harsh chemicals. Keep your pool area safe with these pool chemical storage ideas!

Tip #1: Keep Pool Chemicals Out of Direct Sunlight

The best place to store pool chemicals is in a shed or pool house with storage as these structures will protect them from direct sunlight. Now, the location of said shed or pool house is also important. If you can, make sure that the structure itself is out of direct sunlight as well. This is especially true if you live in a very hot and humid climate.

You also want to make sure that your shed is properly ventilated for proper pool chemical storage. Inhaling too many of these chemicals can be dangerous.

Tip #2: Store Pool Chemicals Away From Flammable Items

As mentioned, pool chemicals can be dangerous. In the same way that you should shy away from inhaling them, you should also keep them away from anything flammable. This includes lawn equipment such as mowers, leaf blowers, and weed whackers.

It also includes your grill!

Tip #3: Make Sure Your Pool Chemicals Are Hard to Reach for Kids (and Pets)

It goes without saying that you should never let your children play near pool chemicals — and the same goes for pets. Just like any other sort of chemical, chlorine, pool shocks, calcium chloride, and the like should never ever be consumed.

Remember: you can warn your kids all you want, but at the end of the day, accidents may happen. You can prevent that by securing your shed or pool house with a lock. You should also put the chemicals on the highest shelf.

Tip #4: Secure All Containers and Don’t Reuse Them

This tip may also seem obvious, but it has to be said: you need to carefully close all of your pool chemical containers after each use. Double and triple-check that they are securely shut so that if they do happen to fall over, you don’t have to worry about a huge (and dangerous) mess.

Related to this is another pool chemical storage tip: don’t reuse the containers. When you purchase a new chemical, throw away the old container, even if there is a little bit left. It may seem wasteful, but if you mix old chemicals with new ones, you run the risk of messing with the composition — which is never a good idea.

Tip #5: Keep Your Pool Chemicals Away From Other Chemicals

Your shed can easily become a catch-all for all of your backyard needs. While this is okay, you want to make sure to store your pool chemicals away from other items. You can do this by purchasing a large plastic tub to keep all of your pool supplies separate.

Here’s a list of things you want to keep away from your pool chemicals:

  • Paint
  • Gasoline
  • Glue
  • Herbicides
  • Fertilizers
  • Household cleaners

Tip #6: Stay Organized

While you may be tempted to stack all of your pool-related items on top of one another to save space, it’s not a good idea. This is especially true for liquids and chemicals in powdered form. You could end up with an accidental chemical reaction, and that can be very dangerous.

Again, make sure that you keep all of the containers secure. To go a step further, resist the urge to stack!

Above all, be careful when handling pool chemicals, and make sure to thoroughly wash your hands when you’re done. A little bit of forethought and organization makes proper pool chemical storage easy!
